To understand José Hurtado’s story is to understand the story of art in a capitalist society.
A creative soul born in a country where creativity is considered a luxury, he was confronted with a choice that many underprivileged artists face every day—the same choice that’s produced some of the world’s most passionate and important artists: follow your heart, or follow the money.
CHAPTER 1: Corazón Salvaje
As a young man, José’s passions weren’t limited to art—he was an ardent basketball fan and possessed a deep and abiding love of the outdoors.
If he was born into different circumstances, he might have spent his early years traveling through national parks or sitting court-side to watch his hero, Kobe Bryant, run the court. But a life of leisure and travel wasn’t his reality.
CHAPTER 2: Mamba Mentality
Without generational wealth to lean on, or to support his creative pursuits, José had to travel a less conventional—and much more challenging—path.
The first step came in the form of a photography job straight out of high school.
His drive and natural talent quickly drew attention, and José would soon find himself graduating from wedding shoots to designing and directing projects for fashion brands.
CHAPTER 3: The Great Outdoors
Even though photography was shaping up to be a promising career, José’s unquenchable curiosity and drive to create led him further into the world of fashion, and he was soon designing clothing, headwear, and accessories.
Before long, his talent and work ethic opened up even more opportunities—this time in the world of graphic design.
José would soon find himself helming design and art direction for some of the most iconic brands in fashion, action sports, and beyond.
He would also find himself feeling unfulfilled.
Although José had achieved what many self-made artists dream of, he was also finding out that making art in corporate America is a physically and emotionally draining pursuit.
Longing for a creative process that didn’t prioritize the bottom line over innovation and exploration, José bided his time.
José started building his reputation and career until he was finally able to leave the corporate grind and pursue the passion that had driven him to pick up a camera all those years ago: art for art’s sake.
CHAPTER 4: Flor De Vida
Now free from corporate brand objectives and decisions by committee, José allows his curiosity to lead the way.
Whether he’s immersed in a new sculpture project or rebuilding an old car, he’s driven by the process of discovery.
